About the Little Truckee River below Boca Dam

The Little Truckee River is a short tailwater in the northern Sierra Nevada north of Truckee, and the reach anglers mean when they use the name runs between Stampede Reservoir and Boca Reservoir, with the gauge sitting below Boca Dam at the downstream end. It is a small river by any measure, easily crossed in most places, and it runs through open meadow and pine bench country. What makes it notable is fish size relative to water size, which is disproportionate.

Cold, stable releases out of Stampede keep the water at trout temperature year-round and support a rich insect base, and the resident rainbow and brown trout grow far larger than the river’s dimensions suggest. Fish move up out of the reservoirs as well, which adds a class of very large trout that a short meadow stream would not otherwise hold. Mountain whitefish are common, and kokanee salmon from the reservoir system are present seasonally.

This is technical water. The river is clear, the currents are complex for their size, and the trout see a great deal of angling pressure because the reach is short, well known and easily reached from Interstate 80. Long leaders, fine tippet and careful approach are standard. Hatches follow the Sierra calendar, with baetis and midges in the shoulder seasons, pale morning duns and caddis through summer, and strong autumn baetis activity.

Flows are managed and can change with little warning as the reservoir system is operated for storage and downstream delivery, so the gauge is essential rather than optional. Special regulations apply to this reach, including gear restrictions and seasonal closures in some years, and anglers should confirm the current rules before fishing. Access is straightforward from the forest road along the river, with several established pullouts.

Seasons

Spring: flows can be high and variable through runoff and reservoir operations; when the release settles, baetis fishing in April and May is excellent.
Summer: the most consistent season. Pale morning duns and caddis through the mornings and evenings, stable cold releases, and heavy angling pressure on weekends.
Fall: the best fishing of the year. Autumn baetis, large brown trout moving ahead of spawning, cooling weather and thinner crowds through September and October.
Winter: cold and often snowbound, with limited road access and seasonal regulation closures on parts of the reach; check current rules and conditions before planning a trip.
