About the Warm Springs Creek

Warm Springs Creek runs east out of the Smoky Mountains and joins the Big Wood River at Ketchum, in the Sun Valley country of Blaine County. The name is literal: thermal and cold springs along the drainage contribute a meaningful share of the flow, and that groundwater input gives the creek a steadiness through the back half of the summer that the purely snowmelt-driven streams in this part of Idaho do not have. It is a tributary rather than a destination river, and it fishes like one, but it is genuinely good water and it sits within a few minutes of one of the best-served mountain towns in the West.

The gauge at Gates Road reports discharge and stage. Central Idaho’s hydrograph is dominated by snowmelt, and the creek runs high and off colour through the peak of runoff in late spring and early summer, when it is not worth fishing. What matters here is the recession: once the melt is past, the spring contribution holds the creek at a fishable level far longer than the drainage area alone would suggest, and it stays cool enough to fish through July and August when lower reaches of the Big Wood are warming and better left alone.

Rainbows are the most numerous trout and are largely wild through the middle and upper creek. Brown trout are present in the lower water near the confluence and run larger. Brook trout occupy the colder headwaters and small feeders, and mountain whitefish are abundant throughout and are a legitimate winter quarry rather than a nuisance. Westslope cutthroat and bull trout are present in the drainage and both carry protections worth checking before a trip, since bull trout in particular require immediate release wherever they turn up. This is small water fished with a careful approach, and the upper reaches reward anyone prepared to walk well beyond the road.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Warm Springs Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for.
