About the Blue River
The Blue River runs through the limestone cave country of southern Indiana, and the geology is the whole story. This is karst – a landscape of sinkholes, springs and underground drainage – and the river is fed by cold spring inflow along much of its length. That keeps it clearer and cooler than the surrounding warmwater streams, and it gives Indiana one of the very few rivers in the state where trout make sense.
Smallmouth bass are the primary fishery and the Blue holds them in good numbers through its riffles and bluff pools. Rock bass and longear sunfish fill in around them and will take a small popper readily. Indiana stocks rainbow trout in the upper river where the springs keep the water coldest, and while the trout are a put-and-take proposition rather than a wild population, they add a dimension that no other southern Indiana float can offer.
The Blue is a canoe river above all else. The reach from Milltown down toward the Ohio is the classic run, moving through steep wooded bluffs, past cave mouths and spring inflows, with easy current and enough gradient to keep a boat moving. Several outfitters run shuttles on the lower river through the summer. Wading the upper reaches around Fredericksburg works well when flows are low.
Because it is spring-fed the Blue holds up in dry weather better than its neighbours, but it is still rain-responsive and the karst means it can rise quickly after a storm. It is also a designated natural and scenic river through part of its course, and the corridor includes cave systems with protected bat populations, so some banks and cave entrances are off limits.
