About the Monroe Lake
Monroe is the largest lake in Indiana, impounded on Salt Creek in the wooded hills south of Bloomington. Much of the shoreline is Hoosier National Forest and state land, which means very little development, a great deal of standing timber in the upper arms, and a lake that feels considerably wilder than its size and popularity would suggest.
Largemouth bass are the main fishery, holding on the timber, the rocky points and the flats at the mouths of the creek arms. Striped bass and hybrids are stocked and provide a genuine open-water fishery, chasing shad in the main lake and giving Indiana anglers a species most of the state cannot offer. Crappie fishing around brush is very good, and the bluegill fishing in early summer is excellent.
The lake divides into a busy lower section near the dam and causeway and a quieter upper end toward the Salt Creek arms, where the timber is thickest and the water colours first after rain. Anglers who fish it regularly tend to move between the two depending on conditions rather than committing to one.
Boat traffic on the lower lake is heavy on summer weekends, but the size of the lake and the amount of protected water in the arms means it is always possible to get away from it.
