About the Bayou Milhomme

Bayou Milhomme runs through the lower Atchafalaya Basin near Stephensville, one of countless channels threading the largest river swamp in North America. Anyone who has fished the basin knows that its bayous are less a set of separate waters than a single system that reorganises itself every year according to how much water the Atchafalaya River is carrying. The gauge near Stephensville reports stage, and in the basin that single number governs almost everything about how and where the fishing happens.

Water level is the whole story. When the basin is high, the river pushes into the swamp and fish spread out through miles of flooded timber, feeding well but scattered across so much water that finding them is the difficulty. As the basin falls, fish are pulled out of the trees and concentrated into the bayous and the deeper cuts, and the fishing becomes both easier and considerably better. Local anglers do not ask whether the basin is high or low so much as whether it is rising or falling, because the direction matters more than the level.

The habitat is cypress and tupelo with willow on the higher ground, fallen timber everywhere, and bottom that ranges from sand in the swifter cuts to deep organic muck in the backwaters. Water clarity swings from clear tannic tea to heavy river silt within a week.

Sac-a-lait and largemouth bass are the principal quarry, with bream, warmouth and a strong catfish population alongside them. Bowfin and several gar species are common and often large.

Access is through Stephensville and Morgan City, with launches feeding the whole lower basin. A boat is essential here and local knowledge is worth a great deal, since the basin’s channels change with each high water and a map from last season may already be out of date.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Bayou Milhomme.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
