About the Bayou San Patricio
Bayou San Patricio drains about eighty square miles of northwest Louisiana hill country and works its way east and north toward the Red River. The gauge sits near Benson and reports both discharge and stage. The drainage lies on the edge of the Kisatchie country, where longleaf pine ridges give way to hardwood bottoms, and the bayou carries the character of both.
The channel alternates between shallow sand runs and deep outside bends, with the bends holding most of the fish. Sand bars build on the inside of every curve and make convenient places to stand and to beach a boat. The banks are timbered and undercut in places, and root wads along the cut banks are prime holding water. Clarity is moderate, generally better than the prairie bayous to the south, and it drops sharply for a day or two after rain.
The fishery is a genuine mix. Spotted bass take the faster water and the current seams, largemouth take the slow deep bends and any accumulated wood, and the two overlap enough that an angler will catch both in an afternoon without changing tactics. Crappie hold in the deepest bends, particularly in spring. Bluegill, longear and redear sunfish are abundant through the warm months, and channel and flathead catfish use the same deep water the bass do. Bowfin and longnose gar are common.
This is a rainfall-driven bayou with no impoundment upstream to steady it, so flows rise fast and fall nearly as fast. The gauge is the only reliable way to know what to expect before making the drive.
Access is entirely by parish road bridge. There are no developed ramps on the bayou itself, and the water is best fished by wading or from a kayak. Natchitoches and Mansfield are the practical bases.
