About the Elk River

The Elk River runs through the far southwest corner of Missouri, formed by Big Sugar Creek and Indian Creek near Pineville and flowing west past Noel into Grand Lake in Oklahoma. It is short, clear, and busy, one of the most floated rivers in the state in July, and it is also a good smallmouth and spotted bass fishery for anglers who go early, late, or on a weekday.

Big Sugar Creek above Pineville is the prettiest water in the system, a small stream with high bluffs and clear pools that floats well in spring and fishes well on foot the rest of the year. The Elk proper from Pineville down to Noel and the state line is bigger and slower, with long pools, gravel bars, and a steady canoe and raft business. Smallmouth, spotted bass, largemouth, goggle-eye, and a few walleye near the lake are the targets; the river also gets a spring white bass run out of Grand Lake.

The Tiff City gauge sits at the bottom of the river near the state line and reads the whole basin. Around 200 to 500 cfs is a good floating flow; under 150 the pools are slow paddling and the fish get spooky in the clear water; above 1,000 the river is high, fast, and stained. Because the Elk rises quickly in its narrow valley, keep an eye on the forecast for the whole watershed, including northwest Arkansas.

Noel and Pineville are the hubs, with more canoe liveries per mile than almost anywhere in the Ozarks and a full slate of campgrounds along Highway 59.

Access

Big Sugar Creek accesses near Cyclone and Pineville: spring floats and wade fishing on the main tributary.
Pineville (Highway 71 area): outfitter accesses at the top of the Elk proper.
Highway 59 corridor between Pineville and Noel: multiple private livery accesses and gravel bars.
Noel: town access near the Highway 59 bridge, a common takeout.
Tiff City area: lower river accesses near the gauge above Grand Lake.

Seasons

March through May: the best fishing of the year with good flows, pre-spawn smallmouth, and white bass from Grand Lake.
June through August: the busiest floating season in Missouri; fish at first light or on weekdays.
September and October: low clear water, few floaters, excellent wade fishing on Big Sugar Creek.
Winter: quiet and slow; fish the deepest pools near Noel and the lake arm.
