About the Wilson Creek

Wilson Creek drains the southeastern flank of Grandfather Mountain and falls hard through a gorge of exposed granite before flowing out into the foothills near Adako. Congress designated it a Wild and Scenic River, which protects the corridor from impoundment and development and is the reason the gorge still looks the way it does. The whole drainage sits within the Pisgah National Forest, so public access is effectively complete.

The creek changes character dramatically over a short distance, and it is best understood in three parts. The headwaters and the small tributaries high on the mountain are steep, cold and tight, holding wild brook trout in the uppermost reaches and wild rainbows below them. The gorge itself is a chaos of house-sized boulders, plunge pools and slides, spectacular to look at and genuinely difficult to fish or to move through safely. Below the gorge the creek opens out, warms, and picks up smallmouth bass and redbreast sunfish.

The middle section is managed as delayed harvest water for part of the year, stocked heavily and restricted to catch and release with artificial lures through the cold months before opening to harvest in the summer. That regulation produces very good fishing in spring and fall and concentrates a lot of anglers into a fairly short stretch. The wild trout water above it sees far less pressure and rewards anyone willing to climb.

Access is via a gravel forest road that runs up the corridor from Mortimer, with pull-offs, campgrounds and a visitor center along the way. The road is rough in places and can close after storms. This drainage took severe flood damage in past hurricanes and the creek rearranges itself in big water, so local conditions are worth checking rather than assuming.

Spring and fall are the best windows, matching both the delayed harvest calendar and the creek’s natural temperature cycle. Summer warms the lower water and drives trout fishing up into the shaded headwaters, where it stays good. Winter is cold and low but the delayed harvest section continues to fish on mild days.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Wilson Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
