About the Watauga River

Most anglers hear Watauga River and think of the Tennessee tailwater below Wilbur Dam. This is the other half of it – the North Carolina headwater reach, a genuine high-country freestone that rises near Grandfather Mountain and runs northwest through Foscoe, Valle Crucis and Sugar Grove before crossing into Tennessee and eventually filling Watauga Lake. It is worth being clear about the distinction, because the two fish nothing alike: the Tennessee river below the dam is a cold, regulated tailwater, while this reach lives and dies on rainfall and elevation.

What it offers is accessible mountain trout fishing within easy reach of Boone and Banner Elk. Wild brown trout are well established and there are wild rainbows and headwater brook trout in the feeder creeks. North Carolina manages significant portions as hatchery-supported and delayed-harvest water, and the delayed-harvest sections in particular fish extremely well from autumn through spring when the fish are numerous and catch-and-release rules apply. Below the trout water, smallmouth bass and rock bass take over as the river warms and widens.

Access is good by mountain standards. Highway 105 and the Valle Crucis road follow the river closely, there are marked public access points, and the Valle Crucis Community Park reach is one of the most-fished pieces of trout water in the region. Much of the remaining frontage is private, some of it fee-access, so the posted signage deserves attention.

The high country gets real weather. Summer thunderstorms blow the river out quickly and winter can ice the upper reaches. Boone and Banner Elk support a full complement of fly shops and guides who fish both this river and the Tennessee tailwater.
