About the Chagrin River

The Chagrin enters Lake Erie at Eastlake, on the other side of Cleveland from the Rocky, and it is the river a lot of local steelheaders prefer. It is smaller, has more gradient, drops through shale ledges and gravel riffles, and clears faster after rain. The Chagrin River Reservation and the Cleveland Metroparks holdings along the lower river give solid public access, and the reaches around Gates Mills, Willoughby and Daniels Park are the best known.

Steelhead are the fishery. Stocked Lake Erie fish return in the fall behind the first cool rains, hold through winter in the deeper pools, and run again hard in early spring. The Chagrin fishes well with fly gear because the water is often clear and the pools are readable, and it rewards anglers who move and cover water rather than sitting on one hole. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and the occasional brown trout fill the summer, and northern pike hold in the slower lower reaches near the harbor.

The Willoughby gauge is the reference. Like every Steelhead Alley tributary the Chagrin is flashy, but because the basin is smaller it rises less and clears faster than the Rocky or the Grand. The classic condition is the day or two after a rain when the river is dropping and running green rather than brown. In a dry fall it can get too low to bring fish in at all, and steelheaders end up waiting on the weather rather than the calendar. Winter ice and slick shale demand care.

Willoughby, Eastlake, Gates Mills and Chagrin Falls are the towns along the river, all within easy reach of Cleveland.

Chagrin River Reservation: Metroparks access through the lower valley.
Gates Mills: middle-river access with pools and riffles.
Eastlake and the river mouth: harbor and pier fishing.
Aurora Branch and the East Branch: smaller upstream tributaries.
Chagrin Falls: the upper river above the falls, a separate small fishery.

Seasons

September and October: the first fall rains and the start of the run.
November and December: peak steelhead fishing with cold, stable water.
January and February: ice and low water; fishable on the warm days between freezes.
March and April: the spring run and the last of the steelhead before the river warms.
