About the Blue River
The Blue River rises from springs in the Arbuckle uplift country of south central Oklahoma and runs about a hundred and forty miles southeast to the Red River, and the stretch that anglers care about is the limestone-ledge section in Johnston and Bryan counties. The USGS gauge near Connerville sits on that upper water and reports discharge and stage without a water temperature series. What makes the river unusual for Oklahoma is its spring base flow: even in dry summers the Blue keeps running over its shelves and small waterfalls when nearby prairie streams have gone to pools.
The river carries two fisheries stacked on one another. From November through March the state stocks rainbow and brown trout in the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area below Connerville, and that winter trout season is the best-known fishing in the region, drawing anglers from across Oklahoma and north Texas. The rest of the year the same water is a warmwater stream, with smallmouth, spotted and largemouth bass on the ledges, longear sunfish everywhere, and channel catfish and white crappie in the deeper pools.
Guiding is mostly wade-and-walk work. The Blue is too shallow and too ledgy for drift boats through the public area, and the standard trip is a walk-in fly or light-tackle day working pool to pool along the bedrock. Kayaks handle some of the lower river when flow allows. The public fishing area provides several miles of continuous access, which is rare in a state where most stream frontage is private, and it is the anchor for nearly all guided activity here.
Flow decides how the day goes. At low spring-fed base flow the pools are clear and the fish are spooky but reachable; after rain the Blue rises hard and drops quickly, and the day or two on the falling limb is the best of the year.
