About the Canton Lake
Canton Lake sits on the North Canadian River in the open country of northwest Oklahoma, and it is the state best-known walleye water. It is shallow, exposed and treeless, and the fishing is entirely an open-water and riprap affair, with the dam face and the points doing the work that timber and docks do on the eastern Oklahoma lakes.
Walleye are the reason people drive here. They spawn on the riprap and the rocky points in early spring and are fished hard through that period, then move out to the flats where they are trolled and drifted through summer. Canton has a long history of producing both numbers and size, and the state manages it accordingly.
White bass are abundant and run up the North Canadian in spring, wipers add fast summer fishing on open water, and the catfishing is dependable. Crappie hold on what brush and structure exists, which is not much, so they concentrate hard where it does.
The thing to know about Canton is that it is vulnerable to drought and to water transfers. The lake has been drawn down severely more than once, and low water changes it completely: less habitat, concentrated fish, and ramps a long way from the water. In a full year it is one of the best lakes in the state; in a dry one it is a difficult place to fish.
