About the Loyalsock Creek
Loyalsock Creek is a creek only by Pennsylvania naming convention. It is a substantial freestone stream that runs roughly seventy miles from the Endless Mountains of Sullivan County to the West Branch Susquehanna at Montoursville, and through the middle it carves a genuine gorge past Worlds End State Park that is among the more scenic pieces of water in the state.
The trout fishing changes as you move down it. The upper reaches and the tributaries hold wild brook trout and some wild browns in cold, tight water that rewards short casts and careful approach. Through the Forksville and Worlds End section the creek is bigger, heavily stocked with browns and rainbows, and popular from opening day onward – this is where most anglers fish it and where the access is best. Below Hillsgrove the water warms through summer and smallmouth bass, rock bass and fallfish take over the lower river, which is excellent light-tackle fishing that almost nobody targets.
Access is unusually generous. Route 87 follows the creek for much of its length with pullouts, Worlds End and Loyalsock State Forest put large blocks of public land on the water, and there are formal access areas around Forksville, Hillsgrove and Barbours. Wading is the standard approach; the gorge section requires care because the boulders are large and the current is stronger than it looks.
The Loyalsock is flashy. It responds hard to rain, and the same gorge that makes it beautiful makes it dangerous at high flow – the 2011 flooding rearranged whole sections of it. Check the gauge before driving up. Fly shops and guides in the Williamsport area cover it alongside Pine Creek.
