About the Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Sam Rayburn is the largest reservoir lying entirely inside Texas, and it fishes like it. The Corps of Engineers impounded the Angelina River in the 1960s, and the resulting lake covers enough flooded creek arms, standing timber and open flats that two boats can fish it on the same day and come back describing different lakes. Anglers who fish it regularly tend to specialise in one third of it.

What sets Rayburn apart from most Texas bass lakes is hydrilla. When the grass is healthy the lake is one of the strongest big-bass fisheries in the South, and the fishing becomes a matter of finding the outside grass edge, the points where it stops, and the holes inside it. When herbicide treatment or a long low pool knocks the grass back, the fish shift to timber and offshore ledges and the lake gets noticeably harder, in a way that catches out visitors working from waypoints somebody gave them three years ago.

It is also one of the most heavily fished tournament lakes in the country, which is worth knowing before you plan a spring weekend. A large field will be occupying the best water on a Saturday morning in March. Weekdays, and the backs of the creek arms, are the answer. Away from the bass boats the crappie fishing is excellent and the blue catfish reach real size.

The gauge below reports pool elevation. Rayburn is a flood-control reservoir as well as a fishery, so the Corps draws it down through winter and lets it fill again in spring, and the difference between those two states decides which cover is actually in the water. A reading well under normal pool means the shoreline bushes are dry and the fish are out on the first break rather than up against the bank.

Access

Cassels-Boykin Park: Corps ramp on the west side with good access to the mid-lake.
Powell Park: north end launch near the Angelina River arm.
Umphrey Family Pavilion and Jackson Hill: mid-lake Corps ramps and camping.
Sam Rayburn Marina and Twin Dikes Park: south end access near the dam.
Etoile and the upper river: shallow timber and current when water is moving.
Rayburn Country and the mid-lake islands: offshore grass and ledge fishing.
Note: the lake is large and open, and wind decides where it is safe to run.

Seasons

Winter: deep fish on ledges and in timber, plus the best crappie months of the year.
February to April: prespawn and spawn in the creek arms, the busiest tournament stretch.
Summer: offshore grass edges and river ledges, early starts, heavy recreational traffic.
Fall: shad move into the creeks and the shallow bite comes back with far fewer boats.
