Tuscarora Creek rises from limestone springs at the foot of North Mountain and runs cold and alkaline all summer, a genuine spring creek in a state better known for freestone water.

About the Tuscarora Creek

Tuscarora Creek is a limestone spring creek, and in West Virginia that is a rare thing. It rises from springs at the base of North Mountain in the Great Valley, on the same belt of carbonate rock that produces the famous spring creeks of the Cumberland Valley to the north. Water that has moved through limestone comes out cold, clear, hard and chemically stable, and the creek carries those properties east across Berkeley County. Where a freestone stream in these latitudes runs eighty degrees in July, Tuscarora holds in the fifties, and that single fact governs everything else about the fishery.

The creek is small, generally fifteen to twenty-five feet across, with watercress beds, waving ranunculus and deeply undercut sod banks. The alkalinity supports an enormous invertebrate population – scuds, sowbugs and cress bugs rather than the mayflies of mountain water – and the trout grow heavy on it. Wild brown trout are the prize, holding under the cress and in the spring runs, and the state stocks rainbows through the accessible reaches. The creek runs directly through Martinsburg, so access is a patchwork of city parkland, road crossings and private frontage, and permission matters here more than it does on public mountain water.

The spring-creek advantage shows up plainly in the gauge record. Discharge barely moves. Where a nearby freestone stream swings through two orders of magnitude in a week, Tuscarora sits inside a narrow band, because the springs feeding it average out months of rainfall underground before it reaches the surface. That means the creek is fishable when everything else in the panhandle is unfishable, in a wet April and an August drought alike. There is no temperature sensor at this gauge, but the spring origin makes the thermal story predictable. Below Martinsburg the creek warms and smallmouth take over from the trout.

The photo at the top of this page is not Tuscarora Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Access

Martinsburg - the gauge city, where the creek runs through town and public park frontage gives the easiest walk-in access.
North Mountain - the limestone springs at the western headwaters, where the creek rises cold and constant.
War Memorial Park - city parkland in Martinsburg with maintained bank access to the middle reach.
Hedgesville - the village north of the headwater springs, useful for reaching the upper spring runs.
Gerrardstown - a small community on the southwestern side of the valley near several of the spring sources.
Tuscarora - the namesake settlement along the middle creek west of Martinsburg.
Opequon Creek confluence - the downstream end, where Tuscarora joins the Opequon and the water turns to smallmouth.

Seasons

Spring: the creek sits near its usual level while every other stream in the panhandle is blown out, which makes it the reliable choice through April.
Summer: the real advantage, with constant cold spring flow holding trout while the regions freestone streams go warm and lifeless.
Fall: brown trout move onto the gravel to spawn and turn aggressive, and the low clear water makes them easy to see and hard to fool.
Winter: open and fishable through most of the season, since the springs keep the creek from icing the way surface-fed water does.
