About the Warm Springs Run
Warm Springs Run is a short stream in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, fed by the mineral springs at Berkeley Springs that gave the town its name and its long history as a spa destination. The springs discharge at a notably constant temperature, warmer than the surrounding groundwater, and the run they form drops east through town and the surrounding valley to join the Potomac River near Hancock.
The spring source does what spring sources always do, which is to flatten out the extremes. The run holds steadier flow than a comparable rain fed stream of the same size, stays open through cold snaps that freeze its neighbours, and does not warm as sharply in July as the shallow limestone country around it otherwise would. That makes it capable of holding trout through periods when a great deal of West Virginia’s put and take water has gone too warm.
This is small, intimate water. It is a run rather than a river, narrow enough in places to step across without wetting a boot, and fishing it means short casts, careful approaches and a willingness to work upstream through brush. West Virginia stocks trout here, and some carry over and grow on the stable conditions. Smallmouth bass, rock bass and bluegill move up from the Potomac into the lower reach, so the fishery is genuinely mixed as you work downstream.
Berkeley Springs is a pleasant base with the state park and its historic spring house in the middle of town, and the run is easy to reach on foot from several points.
Anglers should note that the stocking schedule drives much of the fishing pressure here through spring, and that the run fishes far better on a quiet weekday than on the weekend after a stocking truck has visited.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
