About the Toledo Bend Reservoir

Toledo Bend is the largest reservoir in the South and one of the largest in the country, impounded on the Sabine River along the Louisiana and Texas border. It has repeatedly topped national rankings of bass lakes, and the reasons are straightforward: enormous surface area, extensive standing timber, abundant hydrilla when conditions allow it, and a forage base to match.

Largemouth bass are the headline. The lake fishes shallow in spring around the grass, the timber and the flooded bushes, and offshore in summer along ledges and the old river channel. Because it is so large, conditions differ substantially between the north end and the south end on the same day, and anglers who know it tend to commit to one half.

Crappie fishing is excellent, particularly around the standing timber and brush. White and striped bass provide open-water fishing, and both channel and blue catfish are abundant. Bream fishing in the shallow bays in early summer is very good and largely ignored.

The lake is managed jointly by authorities in both states, and licence requirements depend on where you fish and where you launch. That is worth sorting out before the trip rather than at the ramp.

Scale is the thing visitors underestimate. Toledo Bend runs roughly sixty-five miles from the upper river to the dam, and the difference between the shallow timbered north end and the deeper, more open south end is large enough that they fish like separate lakes on the same afternoon. Picking a launch is picking a fishery.

The gauge below sits on the Texas bank and reports pool elevation and stored volume. Toledo Bend runs meaningful level changes, and on a lake with this much shallow timber and grass, a few feet decides whether acres of cover are in the water or standing dry.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Toledo Bend Reservoir.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
