About the Lake Winnebago
Lake Winnebago is the largest lake lying entirely within Wisconsin, a broad shallow basin in the Fox Valley that averages only around twenty feet deep. That combination of size and shallowness makes it enormously productive and, in wind, genuinely dangerous. It is a working fishery in a way few lakes are.
Winnebago is most famous for lake sturgeon. The system supports one of the healthiest self-sustaining lake sturgeon populations in the world, and the February spearing season on the ice is a cultural event as much as a fishing one, with strict harvest caps and a registration system that has been used as a model of sturgeon management internationally.
The everyday fishery is walleye, and it is substantial. The lake and the connected upriver lakes support a large walleye population that is trolled and drifted over the flats and reefs. White bass run in enormous numbers, yellow perch are abundant, and freshwater drum and channel catfish are everywhere and largely ignored.
Wind is the governing condition. There is no shelter on Winnebago, the fetch is long, and the lake builds a short steep chop very quickly. Local anglers watch the forecast more carefully than the fishing report.
The upriver lakes at Poygan, Winneconne and Butte des Morts are part of the same system and fish differently from the main lake, shallower and more sheltered. When Winnebago is unfishable in a hard wind, they are where the boats go.
The gauge below reports lake elevation. The system is regulated at the outlet, and the level, read together with the wind, tells you a great deal about whether the flats are fishable and how much colour is stirred into the water.
