About the Wolf River (Mississippi)
The Wolf River runs about fifty miles through the pine flatwoods of Harrison and Hancock counties before emptying into the Bay of St. Louis, and it is one of the more attractive small coastal rivers on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The USGS gauge near Landon sits above the tidal influence and reports discharge and stage; there is no water temperature series. Below the gauge the river slows, widens and turns brackish, and above it the water is tannin-stained but clear, running over white sand bars between cypress and tupelo banks.
The fishing is classic southern blackwater river fishing. Largemouth and spotted bass hold on wood and undercut banks, bluegill and redear sunfish are abundant on the sand flats and around cypress knees, and channel and flathead catfish work the deeper bends. Chain pickerel show up in the cooler months in the grassy sloughs, and longnose gar patrol the open sand runs in summer. Nearer the bay the fishery picks up brackish species and blends into the coastal fishery that most Gulf Coast charter guides work.
Guided use of the Wolf is largely paddle-based. Canoe and kayak liveries north of Bay St. Louis run shuttle-supported day floats, and light-tackle guides work the same corridor with kayaks and small jon boats. Sandbar camping is a long tradition on the middle river. Below the gauge, shallow-draft skiffs can reach the lower river from the bay, but downed timber and shifting sand limit motorized travel above that. Bank access is limited and mostly at bridge crossings.
Flow and timber are the practical constraints. The Wolf rises quickly after coastal rain and drops nearly as fast, and each high-water season rearranges the log jams and sand bars, so recent local knowledge matters more than any map. Hurricane seasons can change the river substantially in a single event. Mississippi licenses are required, with saltwater rules taking over in the tidal reach, and the state freshwater regulations linked below carry the current bass and bream limits.
