About the James River (Virginia)

The James River runs the width of Virginia, forming at the confluence of the Jackson and Cowpasture rivers in the Alleghenies and flowing east through the Blue Ridge, across the Piedmont past Lynchburg, Scottsville and Cartersville, and on through Richmond to the Chesapeake Bay. The middle river — roughly from Lynchburg down to the fall line at Richmond — is what most anglers mean by the James, and it is among the best smallmouth bass rivers on the East Coast. The USGS gauge at Cartersville reports discharge, stage and water temperature, and it is the standard reference guides use to set float plans.

Smallmouth bass are the reason people come. The river runs over long limestone and granite ledges broken by gravel bars and grass beds, which is close to ideal smallmouth habitat, and the middle river produces both high numbers and genuine trophy fish. Muskellunge have established themselves as a serious second fishery, particularly in the reaches above Richmond. Flathead, blue and channel catfish are abundant and growing large, rock bass and redbreast sunfish fill the shallow rock, and the tidal river below the fall line adds American shad and striped bass in the spring.

This is drift boat, raft and canoe water. Guided trips are almost always floats between public landings, with anglers casting to ledges, current seams and grass edges, and getting out to wade the shallow rock when flows allow. The James is forgiving enough for beginners at summer levels and technical enough to hold experienced anglers’ interest, which is why the guide community here is one of the largest in the mid-Atlantic. Spring flows can be heavy and push trips downstream fast.

Access is outstanding. The James River State Park, the Upper James River Water Trail and a long chain of county and state landings give reliable put-ins and take-outs across the whole middle river. Virginia fishing licenses are required, with a separate saltwater registration below the fall line. Seasons

Spring: high, colored flows early, the shad run below the fall line, and smallmouth turning on in May.
Summer: the core float season — low clear water, wading the ledges, topwater at dawn and dusk.
Fall: the best big-smallmouth and muskellunge fishing of the year as water cools through October.
Winter: limited float activity; deep-ledge smallmouth and catfish for anglers who go out.
