About the Pawtuxet River

The Pawtuxet is the largest river contained entirely within Rhode Island, formed where its North and South branches join at River Point in West Warwick and running east through Cranston and Warwick to Narragansett Bay at Pawtuxet Village. The USGS gauge at Cranston reads the main stem a few miles above tidewater and reports discharge and stage with no current water temperature series. It is the flow reference anglers use for the whole lower river, and it responds quickly, because this is a small watershed with a lot of pavement in it.

This river is a comeback story and worth understanding as one. A century of mill and municipal discharge left the Pawtuxet among the most degraded rivers in New England, and decades of treatment upgrades plus the removal of the Pawtuxet Falls dam in 2011 reopened the main stem to migratory fish for the first time in three hundred years. River herring and American eel move up now, and the resident fishery has improved with them. Rhode Island DEM stocks trout in the branches and in designated main-stem stretches each spring, and largemouth and smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch and crappie hold in the slow mill-pond reaches and behind the remaining dams.

Fishing here is bank and small-craft work rather than guided float trips. There is no drift-boat industry on a river this size in a state this small. What there is instead is a long chain of parks, bike-path frontage and town accesses that put an angler on the water within minutes of Providence, plus canoe and kayak access on the flatter sections. Guides in Rhode Island generally sell Narragansett Bay saltwater trips, with the Pawtuxet and the Wood or Pawcatuck fished as freshwater alternatives.

Time it around stocking and flow. April and May, right after the spring stocking, are the busiest and most productive weeks for trout, and the bass fishing in the impounded reaches holds up from May through October. Heavy rain blows the river out quickly and it clears just as fast. Seasons

Spring: DEM stocking in April makes this the peak trout window, with river herring moving through the lower river.
Summer: warm and low; bass, pickerel and panfish in the impounded reaches carry the fishing.
Fall: cooling water and steadier flow bring holdover trout and better bass fishing through October.
Winter: open water most years on the main stem, with slow but fishable conditions for pickerel and perch.
