About the Mohawk River
The Mohawk below Delta Dam is two fisheries stacked one on top of the other, and the split happens within a few miles. Water leaves Delta Lake north of Rome and runs cold for the first reach below the dam, which New York manages as a stocked trout fishery. Below Rome the river warms, widens, and becomes the historic Mohawk of the Erie Canal corridor, running west and then east through the valley to meet the Hudson at Waterford. This gauge sits at the top of that sequence, immediately below the dam.
The trout reach below Delta is a short-season fishery worth knowing about, with stocked browns and rainbows holding in the cool release water through spring and early summer. Below that the river is a good and badly underrated warmwater fishery. Smallmouth bass are the main draw and run to real size in the rocky reaches, northern pike and tiger muskellunge hold in the weedy slack water and the canal cuts, and walleye are present through the middle river. Channel catfish, crappie and perch fill out the mix, and boat access along the canal system is excellent.
Because the top of this reach is a release, the gauge is reading a dam operation rather than pure runoff, and levels can change without rain. There is no water temperature sensor on this station, which matters on a trout reach that depends entirely on how cold the release is running. Do not confuse the reaches: a good number here says nothing about conditions in the lower valley eighty miles downstream, where the canal locks and several other dams control the water independently. For visiting anglers the practical plan is to fish the release reach early in the season and shift downstream to the canal corridor smallmouth water once summer sets in properly.
