About the Broad River
The Broad River is one of the major rivers of upstate South Carolina, running down from the North Carolina mountains through the Piedmont to join the Saluda at Columbia and form the Congaree. The reach below Neal Shoals Reservoir near Carlisle is a working tailwater: flow is governed by releases from the dam, and the river below runs over the exposed granite shoals and ledges that give this part of the Piedmont its character.
Shoals are the defining feature. The river spreads wide over rock, breaking into braided channels around bedrock islands, then gathers into deeper runs and long pools before the next shoal. That structure creates a great deal of holding water and a great deal of oxygenated current, and it makes the river both productive and genuinely tricky to navigate. Water level changes with generation, which is the single most important thing to understand before launching.
Striped bass are the headline fish. They run up from the lower system and hold below the shoals in the current seams, joined by hybrid striped bass and white bass. Catfish are abundant and large, with blue, channel and flathead all present and fished seriously. Redeye bass, a Piedmont specialty, hold in the rocky shoal water alongside largemouth and smallmouth. Redbreast sunfish and bluegill are everywhere in the slower edges.
In spring American shad move up the system and are a significant seasonal fishery. The practical advice for this river is to check generation schedules, respect the shoals, and use a jet drive or a kayak rather than a prop boat on the rocky reaches. Below Carlisle the river continues toward Parr Shoals and eventually to Columbia, so a trip here can be scaled from a short shoal-hopping session to a long day covering several miles of braided channel and ledge.
