About the Chipuxet River

The Chipuxet River drains under ten square miles of Washington County, which makes it a creek by any honest measure whatever its name says, and it is one of the more interesting small waters in a state that does not have many. It rises near West Kingston, runs south through the Great Swamp Management Area and empties into Worden Pond, and the change it undergoes over that short distance is the thing worth understanding before fishing it.

The upper river sits on sand and gravel and is fed substantially by groundwater, which keeps it cool and steady in a way the surrounding coastal streams are not. That reach is stocked with trout and fishes like a small New England trout stream: overhung, brushy, and demanding of short casts and quiet feet. As the river drops toward the Great Swamp the gradient flattens, the channel widens into marsh and pond lily, the water warms and stains, and the fishery turns over entirely to chain pickerel, largemouth bass and panfish.

That transition means two different trips depending where you park. Anglers after trout work the upper reaches in spring and early summer. Anglers after pickerel and bass take a canoe or kayak into the swamp reach, which is genuinely good water and considerably wilder than a visitor to Rhode Island might expect. American eel are present throughout and redfin pickerel hold in the smaller weedy side channels.

Access is good by regional standards. The Great Swamp Management Area is public and substantial, the university town of Kingston sits at the head of the river, and a small boat opens the lower reach and Worden Pond beyond it. Pressure is moderate in the stocked reach after opening day and light in the swamp.

The photo at the top of this page is not Chipuxet River.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. The license lasts until you withdraw it (section 4).

You keep the copyright. The license is not exclusive, so you can use the photo anywhere else and license it to anyone else. We will not sell your photo, license it on to anyone else on its own, or use it in paid advertising for a third party.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.

We keep your name, email address, the credit name, the water and date you gave us, and the network address the submission came from, with the submission record, as our evidence of this license. We hold that record for as long as the photo is published and for the retention period described in our privacy policy. Location data that your camera or phone embedded in the file is removed before the photo is published.

7. Versions

The version of this license you accepted is stored with your submission and printed with the photo. A later version does not apply to a photo you have already sent unless you agree to it.

Access

West Kingston - the village at the gauge, the natural starting point for the upper river.
Great Swamp Management Area - the large public tract along the lower river, with parking and trail access.
Worden Pond - the shallow lake the river empties into, with a launch and a strong warmwater fishery.
Kingston - the university town immediately north, with food, fuel and supplies.
Wakefield - the nearest larger centre, with tackle shops and lodging.
Queen River - a neighbouring small stream in the same drainage, a good alternative trip.
Pawcatuck River - the larger regional river to the west, offering a change of water and scale.

Seasons

Spring: stocked trout in the upper river and pickerel active in the swamp reach make this the busiest and best period.
Summer: the upper river holds cool enough for trout in the groundwater fed sections while the lower river fishes for bass and pickerel.
Fall: cooling water improves the warmwater fishing through the swamp and the upper river quietens down.
Winter: flow stays reasonably steady, ice is unreliable on the moving water, and most anglers fish Worden Pond instead.
