About the Siuslaw River Estuary
The Siuslaw River meets the Pacific at Florence, and the four miles between the Highway 101 bridge and the jetties are the part of the river that matters most to anglers. This is tidewater: salt pushing in on the flood, river pushing back on the ebb, and a fishery built around that exchange rather than around river flow. The gauge sits on the bridge itself and reports stage, which on this water is chiefly a tide record.
Fall Chinook are the reason most boats are here. The first fish show in August, the run peaks through the middle of September, and the fishing stays worthwhile into October and sometimes early November. Trolling herring or spinners on the tide changes is the standard approach, and in good years the Siuslaw has given up several thousand kings across a season. Coho are present as well, and the Oregon department has kept wild coho opportunity open on the coastal basins in recent years.
Winter steelhead run through the estuary on their way to the upper river and Lake Creek, and sea-run cutthroat use the tidewater in late summer and autumn, which gives lighter tackle something to do between salmon tides. Regulations on this river move: the department sets coastal salmon rules annually and can impose in-season changes, so the current Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations are the only safe source for bag limits and dates.
The other half of the Siuslaw estuary is shellfish. Dungeness crabbing is genuinely good here, from boats and from the public docks, and many anglers set pots on the way out to the salmon grounds and pull them on the way back. Softshell and purple varnish clams are dug on the flats at low water. Few Oregon estuaries make it this easy to combine the two in one tide.
