About the Medicine Lodge Creek

Medicine Lodge Creek drains south out of the Beaverhead Mountains in Clark County, in the empty country north of Idaho Falls, and it does something most streams do not: it never reaches a river. The creek runs out onto the Snake River Plain and sinks, disappearing into the porous volcanic rock of the aquifer beneath. Hydrologically this is a closed basin, and the gauge near Small measures a stream on its way to vanishing rather than on its way to a confluence.

The creek is spring-fed in its upper reaches, which is what makes it fishable at all in a landscape this dry, and the springs give it cold water and a steadier flow than the surrounding sagebrush would suggest. The drainage area above the gauge is two hundred and sixty-one square miles, but much of that contributes only during snowmelt. Through the summer the creek is a modest, clear, weedy stream running between willows and cut banks.

Trout are present and wild, and they are small. Rainbow trout are the most common, brook trout hold in the cooler upper water and tributaries, cutthroat appear through the system, and mountain whitefish use the larger pools. Fish of ten or twelve inches are good ones here. What the creek offers is not size but solitude: this is genuinely lightly fished water where a day without seeing another angler is the normal outcome.

The serious constraint is access. Much of the lower and middle creek runs through private ranch land, and irrigation diversions take water from those reaches, thinning the stream further in late summer. The realistic public fishing is upstream on Targhee National Forest and BLM ground, and anyone planning a trip should sort out land status before driving in.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Medicine Lodge Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. The license lasts until you withdraw it (section 4).

You keep the copyright. The license is not exclusive, so you can use the photo anywhere else and license it to anyone else. We will not sell your photo, license it on to anyone else on its own, or use it in paid advertising for a third party.

Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
