About the Rocky River

The Rocky River drops into Lake Erie on the west side of Cleveland, and for the last dozen miles it runs through the Rocky River Reservation, a Cleveland Metroparks corridor that puts almost the entire lower river in public hands. Shale cliffs, gravel runs and deep pools in a wooded valley, twenty minutes from downtown: it is the most accessible steelhead river in Ohio and one of the most heavily fished stretches of water in the Great Lakes.

Steelhead are the reason. Ohio stocks Little Manistee strain fish into its Lake Erie tributaries, and they return to the Rocky from fall through spring as big, bright, hard-fighting rainbows. The run starts with the first cool rains of late September and October, holds through winter whenever the river is open and not frozen, and peaks again in March and April. Between runs the river fishes for smallmouth bass, rock bass and northern pike in the lower pools, and there is decent summer wading for anyone who wants an empty river.

The Berea gauge is the number every Ohio steelheader watches. The Rocky is flashy: it blows out fast after rain and turns the color of chocolate milk, then drops and clears over a couple of days. The window most anglers wait for is the falling, green-tinged water a day or two after a rain, when fish move and can still be fooled. Very low, clear winter water means small flies, long leaders and careful approaches. Ice shelves and slick shale make winter wading genuinely hazardous.

Cleveland covers everything. The Emerald Necklace Marina, the Metroparks lots and the Cedar Point Road and Ford Road areas are the main access points, and the East and West branches above the fork add miles of smaller water.
