Deep Bayou Fishing Guides

A slow delta bayou of roughly a hundred square miles of drainage in Lincoln County, tied into the Bayou Bartholomew system, where crappie and catfish carry the fishing and the gauge reads temperature as well as flow.

About the Deep Bayou

Deep Bayou drains about ninety-nine square miles of the Arkansas Delta before it joins the Bayou Bartholomew system southeast of Star City. The gauge near Star City reads discharge, stage and water temperature, which makes this one of the better-instrumented small bayous in the state and a useful thing for an angler planning a trip. Temperature matters here more than it does on a river, because the fishing calendar on a delta bayou is driven almost entirely by how warm the water is rather than by the date.

The character is lowland through and through. Gradient is close to nothing, the channel carries a load of fine sediment, and the water runs stained to muddy most of the year. Cypress and willow line the banks, and the fallen timber they contribute is the structure that matters, because there is very little hard bottom to speak of. Depth is modest and consistent, with the deeper bends holding fish when the shallows warm past comfort. After a Delta rain the bayou comes up fast and colors badly, and it drops nearly as quickly.

Crappie are the fish most people come for, and both black and white crappie use the woody cover through the spring. Catfish are abundant and run to good size, with channel, flathead and blue catfish all present. Largemouth bass hold tight to the timber, and bluegill, longear sunfish and warmouth fill in around them. Bowfin, spotted gar, freshwater drum and carp round out a genuinely varied lowland assemblage.

Access is largely from county road crossings and informal bank spots rather than developed ramps, so a small boat or a pair of waders opens up far more water than a trailered rig will. Pressure is light outside the spring crappie run.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Deep Bayou.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Seasons

Spring: the crappie run is the event of the year, with fish tight to the cypress and willow timber as the water warms.
Summer: fishing shifts to the deeper bends and the shade, with catfish steady day and night and bass on the wood early and late.
Fall: cooling water spreads fish back out and crappie return to the timber for a second, quieter run.
Winter: low clear water concentrates fish in the deepest holes, and the temperature reading on the gauge is worth checking before the drive.
