About the Silver Creek
Silver Creek rises from a series of large cold springs in the high desert southeast of Bellevue, Idaho, and it behaves nothing like the freestone rivers around it. Spring flow keeps the creek at a stable volume and a stable temperature year-round, so it does not blow out in runoff and it does not drop to a trickle in August. The USGS gauge at the sportsman access near Picabo reads stage, discharge and water temperature, and on a spring creek the temperature record matters as much as the flow.
The water is famously clear, slow and weedy, and the trout in it are famously difficult. Brown trout and rainbow trout both grow large on an enormous invertebrate base, and they get a great deal of angling attention, which makes them selective in a way few American trout are. Presentation and drift matter more than pattern. Long leaders, fine tippet and a downstream approach are standard practice, and a considerable amount of the fishing is done to individual sighted fish rather than to water.
The hatches are the draw. Baetis and midges run through the shoulder seasons, pale morning duns and callibaetis fill the summer mornings, and the brown drake emergence in June is a genuine event that fills the valley. Late summer brings tricos and terrestrials, with hoppers and beetles along the grass banks. Autumn returns to baetis and brings the largest brown trout into shallow water ahead of spawning.
Much of the creek runs through a nature conservancy preserve and adjoining private ranch land, and access is managed rather than open. Regulations are restrictive by design, with catch-and-release and tackle restrictions over key reaches, and anglers should check current rules before fishing. Wading is possible but the bottom is soft marl and the weed beds are fragile; many anglers fish from a float tube or from the bank.
