About the North Branch Pawtuxet River
The North Branch of the Pawtuxet begins at the foot of the Scituate Reservoir dam, and that single fact shapes everything about how it fishes. Scituate is Providence’s drinking water supply, and the releases that come out of it are steadier and colder through the summer than the rainfall-driven flows that govern most southern New England rivers. The result is a central Rhode Island river that stays fishable in August when nearby water has gone warm and thin, and that holds stocked trout well past the point where they would normally have been caught out or died off.
From the dam the river runs south through Fiskeville and Hope, a corridor of old mill villages where stone dams, raceways and granite abutments still line the banks. The industrial history is visible at almost every bend, and it is also why the river is a series of short pools and drops rather than a continuous run. Rhode Island DEM stocks the branch through spring, and the deeper mill pools hold fish longest. Below the stocked reaches smallmouth and largemouth bass, chain pickerel and yellow perch take over, and American eel are present throughout.
The gauge at Fiskeville reports discharge and stage, and reading it before a trip is worth the minute it takes, because a reservoir release and a rainstorm produce very different rivers. A steady moderate flow spreads fish through the pools and makes wading straightforward; a release or a heavy rain pushes the river up fast against its mill-era walls and leaves few safe places to stand. At about a hundred square miles of drainage this is a mid-sized river by Rhode Island standards, and it joins the South Branch at River Point to form the main stem.

The photo at the top of this page is not North Branch Pawtuxet River.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

Fiskeville - the gauge village, with the most direct roadside access to the middle reaches and the mill pools below.
Hope - a mill village downstream offering parking and walk-in access to a series of short pools and drops.
Scituate Reservoir dam - the top of the fishable river, where the cold release enters; reservoir land itself is restricted public water supply.
River Point, West Warwick - the confluence with the South Branch and the downstream limit of this reach.
Hope Mill dam - a landmark drop that concentrates fish above and below it.
Route 116 crossings - the practical road access for anglers working the middle river on foot.
Cranston town line - the eastern end of the corridor, where the valley opens and the water warms.
Seasons
Spring: the heaviest stocking and the highest water of the year, with trout spread through every pool and the river at its most productive.
Summer: the reservoir release keeps this branch cooler and steadier than its neighbours, so trout hold over where other Rhode Island rivers give up.
Fall: a quiet and underfished stretch, with holdover trout feeding hard and smallmouth active in the lower pools before the cold sets in.
Winter: low and frequently iced in the slow mill pools, with the fastest water below the dam the only reliably open fishing.
