Monticello Reservoir Fishing Guides

A warm pumped storage reservoir near Jenkinsville that stays open and fishable all winter, with a reputation for largemouth bass well out of proportion to its size.

About the Monticello Reservoir

Monticello Reservoir sits on Frees Creek in Fairfield County, built as the upper pool of a pumped storage scheme paired with Parr Shoals Reservoir on the Broad River below. Water is pumped up into Monticello when power is cheap and released back down through the turbines when demand peaks, so the two pools trade water back and forth on a daily cycle. The reservoir also serves as cooling water for the adjacent nuclear station, and that dual role is what gives the fishery its unusual character.

The defining feature is heat. Cooling water discharge keeps Monticello substantially warmer than any comparable Piedmont impoundment, particularly through winter, when surface temperatures here can sit well above those in the Broad River system nearby. Largemouth bass in a warm reservoir feed and grow through months when fish in neighbouring waters have shut down, and the result is a bass fishery that has drawn tournament anglers from across the southeast for decades and a winter season that is genuinely productive rather than merely tolerable.

The pumping cycle is the second thing to understand. Because water moves between the two pools on a daily schedule, current appears and disappears in predictable places near the intake and discharge structures, and fish position to it much as they would in a river. The gauge reports reservoir elevation, which tracks that cycle directly. Striped and hybrid striped bass are stocked and hold in the deeper open water, blue, channel and flathead catfish are all present and reach good size, and crappie fill the standing timber. Access is limited to a small number of public ramps, so local knowledge counts for more here than on most South Carolina reservoirs.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Monticello Reservoir.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
