About the Chalk Creek
Chalk Creek runs out of the western Uinta foothills through a narrow ranching valley and reaches the Weber River at Coalville, just above Echo Reservoir and half an hour from Park City. It is an unglamorous stream in a state full of famous ones, and that is precisely its value: it holds wild brown trout within an hour of Salt Lake City and receives a fraction of the attention that the Provo and the Weber itself absorb. The drainage of two hundred and fifty square miles makes it a real creek rather than a brook, with water in it through the summer.
The gauge at Coalville reports discharge and stage, and the flow record tells a familiar interior-west story. Snowmelt dominates the spring, with the creek running high and off-colour through May and into June in a good snow year, and irrigation withdrawal in the valley shapes the summer hydrograph as much as the weather does. Late summer can pull it down hard. The window that matters runs from the clearing of runoff in late June through to October, when flows are low, the water is clear and the fish are concentrated and catchable.
Wild brown trout are the backbone of the fishery and they come in better sizes than the creek’s dimensions suggest, holding under the cut banks and the willow cover that the ranching valley has left along much of the channel. Rainbows and cutthroat appear, brook trout occupy the cooler upper reaches toward the forest boundary, and mountain whitefish are present in the lower water near the Weber. Access is the real constraint: most of the valley is private ranchland, and the public water is concentrated near Coalville and on the national forest above.

The photo at the top of this page is not Chalk Creek.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
