About the Mattaponi River
The Mattaponi is one of the two rivers that meet at West Point to form the York, and it is among the most intact river corridors left in tidewater Virginia. Above the head of tide it is a true blackwater stream, stained the colour of tea by the swamps it drains, running slow between cypress and gum. Below Beulahville it becomes tidal, widening through marsh and forest with very little development on either bank. The Mattaponi Indian Reservation sits on the lower river, one of the oldest continuously occupied reservations in the country, and the tribe has run a shad hatchery here for decades.
The fishing changes with the tide line. Above it, the river is a largemouth, pickerel and bowfin fishery, with fish holding against cypress knees, deadfalls and the outside of every slow bend. Below it, the character turns tidal and the species list broadens considerably – blue catfish have become abundant and grow large, white and yellow perch fill the winter and early spring, and striped bass move up on the flood. The spring run is the event of the year: American and hickory shad push up from the Chesapeake in March and April and are pursued hard, though anglers should check the current digest closely because Virginia’s shad rules are restrictive and have changed in recent years.
The gauge near Beulahville is well equipped and includes a temperature sensor along with discharge, stage, conductance and dissolved oxygen. That temperature trace is genuinely useful here for timing the shad and perch runs, which key on water warming through the high forties and low fifties rather than on the calendar. Guided trips out of Aylett and Walkerton are the easiest way to learn the tidal river, and the ramps there put you within reach of both the blackwater above and the marsh below.
