About the Lake Koshkonong
Koshkonong is not a lake in the usual Wisconsin sense. It is a wide, shallow impoundment of the Rock River, roughly ten thousand acres of it, sitting between Fort Atkinson and Edgerton with the river running in at the top and out at the bottom. Average depth is only a few feet, and the whole basin behaves more like slow river than like a deep glacial lake. That single fact drives everything about fishing it: the water is turbid, the bottom is soft, the forage is abundant, and the fish are river fish that happen to be spread across a very large flat.
Walleye are the main draw and the reason most guided trips run, concentrating near the inlet and outlet current and moving up into the Rock River itself on the spring run. Catfish are the second serious fishery, with both channels and flatheads reaching real size in a system this fertile. Northern pike, white bass, crappie, drum and bass fill the rest of the calendar. The panfish runs in spring and the white bass push in early summer are both worth planning around, and the winter ice fishery for perch and crappie is well established.
The hazard here is wind, and it is not a minor one. Because the lake is so shallow and so open, a moderate breeze builds a short steep chop very quickly and can make the middle genuinely dangerous for small boats while the shoreline still looks calm. Local guides plan around forecast wind more than around anything else. The gauge reports lake level and precipitation rather than water temperature, and level matters here because a few inches changes which flats are fishable and which ramps will float a trailer.
