About the Big Sandy Creek

Big Sandy Creek rises on the western slope of the Alleghenies in Preston County, West Virginia, and runs roughly northwest to join the Cheat River near Rockville. For most of its length it is an ordinary Appalachian freestone creek – shaded, cobbled, moderate gradient – but in its final few miles it drops into a sandstone gorge and falls hard, producing a run that is nationally known among whitewater paddlers and almost unknown to anglers. That split personality is exactly what makes it worth listing: it is a genuine creek fishery with a genuine river-guide presence, just not one aimed at fishing.

The upper creek above the gorge holds stocked brown and rainbow trout in the cooler months and wild fish in the shaded feeder streams. West Virginia stocks the accessible reaches in spring, and the creek fishes well for a few weeks before summer temperatures push the trout into the tributary mouths. As the water warms, smallmouth bass and rock bass move up from the Cheat and become the reliable target through the plunge pools and pocket water. Rock bass in particular are abundant here and are what most anglers actually catch on a summer afternoon.

Access is the real constraint. The gorge section is steep, remote, and reached on foot down old rail grades and rough trails, and the creek within it is a scramble rather than a wade. The upper reaches near Bruceton Mills and along the Rockville road are far easier, with roadside parking and short walk-ins. Flow is flashy: the basin is small and steep, and the creek rises and falls within hours of rain. The Rockville gauge reads discharge and stage, which makes it the practical check on whether the creek is fishable or simply moving too fast.

Access

Rockville - roadside access near the gauge and the usual starting point for both anglers and paddlers heading into the gorge.
Bruceton Mills - the upper creek is easily reached from town and is where the stocked trout water is concentrated.
The Jenkinsburg bridge at the Cheat confluence - the downstream end of the gorge run and the best smallmouth access on the system.
Old rail grades and rough footpaths give walk-in access into the gorge, but the descent is steep and unmaintained.
Much of the surrounding land is private or timber ground; the state stocking access points are the reliably public ones.
The gorge itself is a scramble, not a wade - the creek falls over ledges and through boulder gardens with no easy bank.
The basin is small and flashy; a summer thunderstorm upstream can double the flow in under two hours.

Seasons

Spring: high, cold and fast. Stocked trout in the accessible upper reaches from March into May, and the gorge is running at paddling levels rather than fishing levels.
Summer: low and clear. Smallmouth and rock bass through the pocket water and plunge pools, and the most comfortable wading of the year.
Fall: cool water and low flow make October the best month on the creek, with smallmouth still active and almost no one else on the water.
Winter: cold, icy and largely unfished. Access into the gorge is dangerous and the upper creek is not stocked again until spring.
