About the Lake Hudson

Lake Hudson lies between Grand Lake and Fort Gibson on the Grand River, impounded behind Markham Ferry Dam. It is narrower and more river-like than Grand, and because it sits directly below a hydroelectric dam it has current running through it whenever water is being generated upstream. That current is the defining feature of fishing it.

White bass are the signature fishery. They concentrate in the current below Pensacola Dam and along the channel, and when water is moving the fishing can be as fast as anything in the state. Largemouth and spotted bass hold on the rock, the bluffs and the wood along the channel edges, and they behave more like river fish than lake fish.

Catfishing is excellent, particularly for blue catfish in the current and flatheads in the timber and rock. Crappie hold on brush and the bridge structure. Paddlefish move through this stretch of the Grand River system as well.

Because Hudson responds to generation upstream rather than to weather alone, checking whether water is moving is more useful than checking the forecast. Slack water can make the lake feel empty; moving water turns it on within an hour.

Hudson is also the least developed of the three Grand River lakes, with fewer docks and less shoreline building than Grand above it. That makes it a quieter place to spend a day, and it means the fish relate to natural cover and to current rather than to a wall of boathouses.

The gauge below reports stored volume. On a run-of-river reservoir like this the level itself changes less than on a flood-control lake, so the number is most useful read as a trend: rising means water is being passed through the chain and the current fishery is likely on.

Below Pensacola Dam: the current fishery and bank access.
Markham Ferry Dam area: the lower end and deeper water.
Spavinaw Creek arm: quieter water off the main channel.
Bridge crossings give bank access and crappie structure.

Seasons

Winter: crappie and catfish holding deep, and quiet water between generation.
Spring: the white bass run, the best and busiest fishing of the year.
Summer: current-driven fishing at dawn and whenever water is moving.
Fall: cooling water and steady catfish and bass fishing along the channel.
