About the Black Warrior River below Bankhead Lock and Dam
Bankhead Lock and Dam sits on the Black Warrior River west of Birmingham, and the water immediately below it is one of the more productive tailwaters in west Alabama. The gauge below the dam reports stage continuously, which is the number that matters most here, because everything about the fishing follows what the dam is doing. When water is moving, bait is pulled through the structure and predators set up behind it. When it is off, the tailrace goes slack and the fish scatter.
Spotted and largemouth bass are the everyday fish, holding on the rock, the lock walls and the current seams below the dam. Striped bass and hybrids concentrate in the tailrace during the cooler months and are the reason a lot of boats make the run, particularly when generation is steady. White bass push up in spring in good numbers. Catfish are abundant and often large, with blues and channels spread through the tailrace and flatheads holding in the deeper scour holes against the structure.
The Black Warrior is a working navigation river, and that shapes the day. Barge traffic uses the lock, the tailrace has restricted zones close to the structure, and safety cables and signage mark how far up anglers may run. Those limits are enforced and should be respected. Below the immediate tailrace the river settles into a wide impounded reach with bluff banks and creek mouths that fish well on their own terms.
