About the Cheat River

The Cheat River gathers five forks off the highest ground in West Virginia and runs north through Parsons toward the Cheat Canyon, and the stretch the USGS gauge at Parsons watches is the one guides actually float. Above town the Shavers Fork and the Blackwater come in cold; below it the river widens into long, boulder-studded pools separated by ledge drops that a raft or an inflatable drift boat handles well at moderate flow. The gauge reads discharge, stage and water temperature, and on this river temperature is the number that decides whether the day is a trout day or a smallmouth day.

That split is the Cheat’s defining feature. Through spring and again in late fall the upper river fishes as trout water, with holdover and wild brown trout in the deeper pools and brook trout pushing out of the colder tributaries. Once summer readings climb into the seventies the trout retreat toward spring seeps and the smallmouth take over, holding on the same ledges and eating crayfish patterns and topwater through September. Walleye work the deeper runs year-round, and a small but real muskellunge population lives in the slow flats below Parsons.

Guided trips here are almost all float trips. Outfitters based in Parsons, Elkins and Albright run rafts and inflatable drift boats on day sections, while the canyon below Albright is sold as a whitewater trip rather than a fishing float. Wade access exists but is limited by private ground, so most of the productive water is reached by boat. Because the Cheat is entirely free-flowing, with no dam to steady it, flow swings hard after rain and a trip booked three days out may be moved to a different section.

Read the Parsons gauge before committing. Below roughly 300 cfs the ledges get bony and the floats get long; above about 3,000 cfs the river runs fast, pushy and off-color, and the fishing window closes before the safety one does. The productive band sits between those numbers and holds for days at a time in April, May and October. West Virginia licenses and a trout stamp are required in season, and the state regulations linked below carry current creel and size limits.

Access

Parsons town access at the USGS gauge - the standard upper put-in and the reference point for flow.

Seasons

Spring: high, cold water; trout fish best from mid-April as flows drop, and the first smallmouth move up in May.
Summer: warm readings push trout to seeps and the smallmouth float becomes the trip, best early and late in the day.
Fall: cooling water spreads fish back through the pools and October gives the most reliable float conditions of the year.
Winter: high and unfishable more often than not, with occasional low-flow days for holdover browns near Parsons.
