About the North Brush Creek

North Brush Creek drains the western slope of the Snowy Range in the Medicine Bow National Forest and runs down toward the North Platte River in the Saratoga valley of south central Wyoming. This is high country water. The headwaters sit above nine thousand feet in lodgepole pine and spruce, and the creek falls through a sequence of meadow reaches and short timbered canyons before reaching the sagebrush flats of the valley floor. Most of its length is on national forest land, which makes access straightforward in a state where private ground closes a great deal of water.

The flow regime is pure snowmelt. Runoff peaks hard in late May and June when the Snowy Range snowpack releases, and through that period the creek is high, cold and largely unfishable. It drops through July into a long clear low water period that runs to autumn, and that is when the creek fishes. Because the basin is small and almost entirely forested, the water clears quickly after summer thunderstorms and the discharge trace settles within a day or two of a storm rather than staying up for a week.

The fishing is small stream trout fishing of the most straightforward kind. Brook trout dominate much of the upper creek and are abundant if not large, with brown trout heavier and warier in the lower meadow reaches and rainbow trout mixed through. Cutthroat are present in parts of the drainage. Willow lined meadow sections hold the better fish and demand a careful approach, while the pocket water in the timber rewards covering ground quickly. The North Platte below Saratoga is the region’s celebrated water and takes almost all the guide traffic, which leaves creeks like this one quiet.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not North Brush Creek.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. Copies that are already outside our control — search-engine caches, social posts that have already gone out, printed material already produced — may take longer to disappear or may not be recallable, and we are not responsible for those.

5. What we may do

We choose which photos to publish and may decline any submission without giving a reason. We may crop, resize, sharpen or colour-correct a photo for display, and we may remove a photo at any time. We will not alter a photo in a way that misrepresents the fish, the water or you.
