A goggle-eye found nowhere on earth but the upper White River system of Missouri and Arkansas, and one of the most narrowly endemic game fish in North America.

Identification

Ozark bass are heavy-bodied, large-mouthed, large-eyed centrarchids of the genus Ambloplites — the group Missouri anglers call goggle-eye. Like all rock basses they carry roughly 12 dorsal spines and 6 anal spines, which separates them at a glance from warmouth (3 anal spines) and from every Lepomis sunfish.

The species name constellatus — constellated, star-scattered — points at the field mark. Where northern rock bass carry dark spots arranged in tidy parallel rows along the scale rows, Ozark bass carry dark speckling scattered irregularly across a lighter ground, without the ordered rows. It is a real difference, but it is a difference of degree on a variable fish, and it is not always decisive on a wet fish in a boat.

In practice, the most reliable identification of an Ozark bass is geographic. Robert Cashner and Royal Suttkus described the species in 1977, splitting it out of what had until then been treated as a single wide-ranging rock bass, and the split was drawn along drainage lines. If a goggle-eye comes out of the upper White River system, it is an Ozark bass.

Range and distribution

Ozark bass are endemic to the Ozark Upland section of the White River system in Missouri and Arkansas. That is the whole of it. The USGS non-indigenous aquatic species database gives the native range as the upper White River drainage in Arkansas and Missouri, and NatureServe puts the total range area between about 5,000 and 200,000 square kilometres — a small footprint for a fish that anglers catch routinely.

On the Missouri side, the Department of Conservation’s drainage rule, set out in the 2002 Missouri Conservationist article “Rock Bass: Panfish Supreme”, assigns Ozark bass to the rivers and tributaries feeding Table Rock Lake, Bull Shoals Lake and Lake Taneycomo — the south-central part of the state. MDC’s watershed assessments bear this out at the individual-river level: Ozark bass appear among the common sportfish in the James River Watershed Inventory and Assessment and again in the North Fork River Watershed Inventory and Assessment. On the Arkansas side the species is described by NatureServe as particularly abundant in the Buffalo River and the upper White itself.

It is worth noting what MDC does not have: there is no per-species field guide page for Ozark bass on the MDC website. The department’s public species accounts cover northern rock bass and warmouth; Ozark bass is documented instead through the watershed inventories and the Conservationist. Anyone researching this fish through state sources needs to know where to look.

Ozark bass were also stocked outside their native basin before anyone knew they were a separate species. USGS records intentional stocking for sport from the Arkansas state hatchery at Centerton into non-native Arkansas drainages, and possibly into the Osage drainage in Missouri. None of those introductions established: USGS states there is no evidence of established populations in non-native areas, and the Osage records are decades old with no recent confirmations.

Habitat and water temperature

Ozark bass occupy the same water as their congeners — clear, gravel- and bedrock-floored Ozark streams, with adults holding in and around boulders, ledges, rootwads and woody debris in the deeper pools and in moving water of moderate depth. MDC’s general goggle-eye habitat description, drawn from the Conservationist, places fish in the nooks and crannies of rootwads and undercut rock in running water between 3 and 12 feet deep through the daylight hours, with activity peaking at dawn, dusk and after dark.

On temperature, honesty is more useful than precision. No thermal optimum, stress threshold or lethal limit has been published specifically for Ozark bass. There is no federal habitat suitability model for the species and no state thermal criterion. The nearest defensible figures come from the genus: compiled preference records for rock bass give 21–26°C (70–79°F), and USFWS habitat suitability information for smallmouth bass — a species that shares every Ozark bass stream — gives optimal adult growth at 26–29°C (79–84°F) and an upper lethal limit above 32.3°C (90°F).

What can be said with confidence is that the upper White River system is a spring-dominated landscape, and that Ozark bass streams tend to run cooler and steadier through summer than lowland warmwater rivers. A related USGS study in the neighbouring Current River system found a spring branch holding at 13.5 ± 1°C (about 56°F) year-round and being used as a thermal refuge by shadow bass and longear sunfish in cold periods — direct evidence that Ozark Ambloplites respond to spring influence.

Life history

Ozark bass spawn in spring, with males constructing and guarding circular nests over gravel in the manner typical of the genus. In Missouri, MDC describes goggle-eye spawning beginning around mid-April and running four to six weeks.

Population data for the species is better than it used to be. A 2013 field study of Arkansas populations, catalogued on the USGS publications warehouse, sampled the Buffalo River and Crooked Creek by boat electrofishing and aged fish by otolith. The contrast between the two streams is instructive:

  • Buffalo River: 139 fish, mean length 151.2 mm, catch per effort 32.9 fish/hour, mean annual survival for ages 2–9 of 50% (±7%), mean relative condition 95.9%.
  • Crooked Creek: 188 fish, mean length 161.7 mm, catch per effort 101.5 fish/hour, mean annual survival 55% (±5%), mean relative condition 104%.

Von Bertalanffy growth modelling gave an asymptotic length around 258–260 mm — roughly 10 inches — for both streams, though the shape of the growth curve differed: Buffalo River fish grew faster through age 3, while Crooked Creek fish ended up longer on average. The same study compared the three rock basses directly and found shadow bass with higher mean annual survival (64%) and larger mean lengths, and rock bass with the fastest growth after age 3. Ozark bass, in other words, is the slower-growing and shorter-lived of the three.

NatureServe puts the total population as unknown but presumed to exceed 10,000, and describes the species as common within its small native range.

Diet

Ozark bass feed as rock basses do: crayfish, aquatic insect larvae, terrestrial insects taken off the surface, and small fish. The large mouth relative to body size is the defining feature of the genus’s feeding ecology — a 7-inch goggle-eye can take prey that a 9-inch bluegill cannot. Crayfish availability tracks the rock, ledge and gravel habitat these fish hold in, and the nocturnal activity peak that MDC describes for goggle-eye generally lines up with crayfish activity.

Angling

Ozark bass are a float-stream fish. The upper White system’s floatable rivers — the Buffalo, Crooked Creek, the James, the North Fork, Bull Shoals and Table Rock tributaries — are the entirety of the species’ world, and goggle-eye have been part of the Ozark float-fishing tradition for as long as that tradition has existed.

They come to hand as part of a mixed catch alongside smallmouth bass and longear sunfish out of the same ledges and rootwads, and the catch rates recorded in the Arkansas study give some sense of density: over 100 fish per hour of electrofishing on Crooked Creek is a substantial standing stock for a fish of this size. They are most catchable in low light and after dark, when they move off structure, and they concentrate predictably during the spring nesting period.

For the table they are a small but clean fillet, and like other Ozark stream fish they benefit from the cold, clear spring water they come out of.

Conservation

NatureServe assigns Ozark bass a global rank of G4G5 — rounded to G4, apparently secure — with N4 nationally and S4 in both Missouri and Arkansas, and notes no major known threats. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern. The species is not federally listed; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service species profile carries no ESA status.

The G4G5 rank, rather than a flat G5, reflects the obvious vulnerability of endemism. A fish confined to a single river system has no refuge elsewhere; whatever happens to the upper White River happens to the whole species. Impoundment has already converted long reaches of the mainstem White to reservoir and tailwater, and the remaining free-flowing habitat — the Buffalo, Crooked Creek, the upper James, the North Fork — carries a disproportionate share of the species’ future.

There is also a taxonomic caveat that anyone using Ambloplites records should carry. Roe, Mayden and Harris (2008, Copeia 2008(4):858–867) found that morphology, mitochondrial DNA and allozymes could not reliably separate A. ariommus from A. rupestris in the Interior Highlands. Ozark bass is the better-supported of the three Interior Highlands rock basses — it was described on morphological grounds in 1977 and is geographically isolated in a way the other two are not — but the genus as a whole remains an unsettled group, and older survey records assigning Interior Highlands goggle-eye to species should be read with that in mind.
