About the Lake Eufaula

Walter F. George Reservoir, known to nearly everyone who fishes it as Lake Eufaula, is the large Chattahoochee impoundment on the Georgia and Alabama line, and it carried the nickname Bass Capital of the World for a long stretch of the twentieth century. It remains a serious largemouth lake, with expansive shallow flats, flooded timber, grass beds and a deep old river channel running the length of it.

The fishing splits cleanly by season, and the two halves are almost different sports. In spring the fish are in the shallow creek arms and up on the flats, and Eufaula can be as generous as any lake in the South. In summer they move out to the ledges along the river channel and it becomes an offshore lake, where finding one good school is worth more than covering ten miles of bank. Anglers who only know the spring version of this lake tend to struggle badly in July.

Crappie are the other major fishery and support a good deal of local guiding, particularly around brush and the bridge crossings. The catfishing, especially for blue catfish in the deeper water toward the dam, is very good and lightly pressured compared with the bass.

The reading below is pool elevation. Eufaula runs a winter drawdown and a summer pool, and because so much of the lake is shallow flats, a few feet either way decides whether acres of grass and wood are in the water or high and dry. On a lake this size that single number reshapes the fishing more than it would almost anywhere else.

Note: much of the lake is shallow. Watch for stumps away from marked channels.

Seasons

Winter: crappie on brush and bridges, and bass grouped on the channel ledges.
February to April: the best bass fishing of the year, shallow and in the creek arms.
Summer: offshore ledge fishing on the old river channel, and excellent catfishing.
Fall: shad move shallow again and the creek arms come back to life.
