About the West Point Lake

West Point is a Chattahoochee River impoundment straddling the Georgia and Alabama line, and it is a far more traditional southern bass lake than its neighbours to the north. It is shallower, more fertile and more stained, with wood cover, flats and creek arms rather than deep clear rock. For anglers who would rather fish shoreline cover than stare at open water, it is much the more forgiving lake.

Largemouth are the main quarry and West Point has long been a dependable spring tournament venue. Spotted bass are present and steadily increasing, as they are throughout the basin. The crappie fishery is genuinely good and heavily fished by people who live nearby, and there is a serious catfish population including blue catfish that reach real size in the deeper water toward the dam.

The lake divides cleanly. Above the mouth of the river the water is shallow, wooded and current-influenced, and when the Corps is moving water it fishes almost like a river. The lower end near the dam is deeper and behaves like a conventional reservoir, with points, humps and channel edges. Most regulars pick one of those two lakes and learn it properly rather than splitting their time.

The gauge below reports pool elevation. West Point runs a summer pool and a lower winter pool, and the drawdown is enough to take shoreline cover out of the water completely. Read alongside recent rain in the upper Chattahoochee, that number is the fastest way to know whether you are arriving at a clear, stable lake or a rising and muddy one.

Corps of Engineers parks: ramps along both the Georgia and Alabama shores.
Highland Marina and R. Shaefer Heard Park: ramps and camping near West Point.
Pyne Road Park: LaGrange-side access with good parking and bank fishing.
Glass Bridge and Amity: mid-lake ramps with quick access to the creek arms.
Yellowjacket Creek arm: shallow, wooded water that fishes well in spring.
Upper Chattahoochee arm: current-influenced water at the head of the lake.
Note: match your launch to the section you intend to fish. The lake is long.

Seasons

Winter: crappie on brush and bridges, and bass holding on the deeper channel edges.
March and April: the peak, prespawn and spawning fish in the creek arms and on the flats.
Summer: fish move to the river channel and offshore structure, catfishing is at its best.
Fall: shad push into the creeks and the shallow bass fishing returns.
