About the Green River (Kentucky)

The Green River runs across south central Kentucky through the limestone country that produced Mammoth Cave, and it is both a fine smallmouth float and one of the most biologically significant rivers in North America. The reach through Mammoth Cave National Park is protected and undeveloped, with hardwood bluffs, springs pouring out of the rock, and a mussel and fish diversity that draws biologists from around the world.

For anglers the draw is smallmouth bass in the shoals and rock bass in the pockets, with musky in the deeper pools on the upper river and catfish everywhere. It is classic Kentucky float water: canoe or kayak, a day at a time, working the current breaks below every riffle. The park section from Dennison Ferry down to Houchin Ferry is the prettiest stretch and has the least development, and the reaches around Munfordville give the most convenient access.

The Munfordville gauge is the working number for the upper and middle river. Roughly 200 to 1,200 cfs floats well and keeps the shoals readable; low late-summer readings under a hundred mean shallow bars and a lot of walking, and a spring number in the thousands puts the river into the trees and off-color. Upstream, releases from Green River Lake affect the flow, so a sudden change without local rain usually means the dam.

Munfordville, Brownsville and Cave City are the base towns, and Mammoth Cave National Park has campgrounds and ferries. Canoe liveries run the park section in season, and there is more public land along this river than most Kentucky floats.
