About the Bayou de Loutre

Bayou de Loutre runs out of the south Arkansas line country down through Union Parish to meet the Ouachita River near Sterlington, and it is the kind of water that rewards anglers who prefer quiet to reputation. The name is old French for otter bayou, and otters are still there. The channel is narrow, dark with tannin, and lined with cypress and tupelo standing in the water rather than back from it, which means the cover an angler fishes is timber rather than bank. Current is slow enough through most of the reach that the bayou reads as a long shallow lake with a direction.

Fishing here is a cover game. Cypress knees, submerged trunks and the occasional beaver cut hold bass and bream through most of the year, and the deeper bends near the Ouachita junction hold catfish and the bigger crappie. Chain pickerel are present and take a fly or a spinner readily, which surprises anglers who expect only the usual southern warmwater mix. Bowfin are common and fight harder than anything else of their size in the water, and anyone fishing soft plastics near timber will meet one eventually.

The Sterlington gauge reports stage and water-surface elevation rather than discharge, and that is appropriate for a water with this little gradient. What the numbers tell an angler is the relationship between the bayou and the Ouachita: when the river is high it backs water up into the bayou, spreading fish into flooded timber and making them hard to find, and when the river drops the bayou drains back to its channel and concentrates them. The best fishing follows a fall. Access is limited and informal, mostly bridge crossings and launches on the Ouachita, so a shallow boat or kayak is close to essential.

This water needs a real photo

The photo at the top of this page is not Bayou de Loutre.

It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.

1. What you give us

By ticking the box on the form you grant Guided Floats, LLC (“GuidedFloats”, “we”) a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, copy, resize, crop and display your photograph on guidedfloats.com, in GuidedFloats’ own social media accounts and mobile apps, and in material that promotes the site itself, in connection with the fish, water or community feature you sent it in for. Access

Sterlington - the town nearest the gauge and the junction with the Ouachita, with the closest boat access to the lower bayou. / Monroe - the regional city south of the reach, the base for tackle, lodging and supplies. / West Monroe - the paired city across the Ouachita, with additional ramps and services. / Ouachita River launches - the practical way onto the lower bayou is to launch on the river and run up. / Marion - a Union Parish approach to the middle bayou on the northern end of the reach. / LA 2 and LA 15 bridges - highway crossings offering limited bank and kayak access. / Union Parish gravel roads - the network reaching the bottomland, soft and often impassable after rain.

Seasons

Spring: the bayou comes alive as the water warms, with bass and bream on the cypress cover and crappie in the deeper bends; watch the Ouachita's stage. / Summer: hot, low and very dark; fish the shade under the cypress early and late, and expect catfish through the middle of the day. / Fall: falling water pulls fish back into the channel and this is the most reliable sight-fishing of the year around the timber. / Winter: slow and cold, with fish holding deep near the river junction; a poor time to explore but a good one for a heavy crappie.
