About the Rough River Lake
Rough River Lake impounds the Rough River in Grayson and Breckinridge counties, in the rolling country of western Kentucky between Louisville and Owensboro. It is a Corps of Engineers flood-control project of around five thousand acres, and it has a lower profile than Kentucky’s headline reservoirs, which for an angler is generally a point in its favour: it fishes well without the pressure.
The gauge reports pool elevation. As with any flood-control lake this is the number that organises the fishing. Rough River is held at a summer recreation pool and drawn to a lower winter pool, and on top of that seasonal cycle it rises sharply after rain across the catchment. High water floods the buckbrush and standing timber along the banks and pushes bass right up into it; falling water pulls the same fish back onto points, channel swings and deeper brush. Reading the elevation trend tells you which of those two games you are about to play.
Largemouth bass are the main fishery, with spotted bass mixed in and smallmouth present in the clearer lower end near the dam. Crappie are excellent here and are what many locals come for, holding on brush piles and standing timber in the creek arms. White bass and stocked hybrids chase shad in open water through the warmer months. The catfishing is strong, with blues, channels and flatheads all present. Muskellunge have been stocked in the system and are an occasional and memorable bycatch.
Access is good, with a state park, resort lodge, marina and several public ramps. The lake sits in pleasant, quiet country with little development on its shoreline. Kentucky statewide regulations apply, with some lake-specific limits, so check the current book before fishing.

The photo at the top of this page is not Rough River Lake.
It is a regional stand-in, honestly captioned but generic — we will not put a name to a river we cannot prove. Send us a photograph you took here and it replaces the stand-in, with your credit on it.
